TATA"s New GSM Service with Smart Featured Handsets
The TATA Tele-Services Ltd will provide its customers with much better featured handsets and smart-phones in CDMA & GSM for its popularity in the Telecom market. TATA Tele-Services Ltd is a leading Telecom operator in the country and so far offered its customers with CDMA services only.
Being the world’s fourth and India’s second- TATA Tele-Services Ltd has hopped into the GSM bandwagon and is making absolutely no bones about why they chose to do so. TTSL said, “With spectrum in the CDMA band being made unavailable by the regulator, TTSL had no option but to choose a less efficient GSM platform for future growth.
The TATA group company having 26% stakes of the Japanese Mobile Services Firm NTT DoCoMo Ltd is setting up a GSM phone services, adding to its CDMA (Code Division Multiple Access, a rival standard to GSM) networks.
TTSL MD Anil Sardana said, “In Indian situations, we need to keep the aspect of spectrum availability in mind. The spectrum allocation for CDMA operations is only 800 MHz and no extra spectrum is available beyond what is already allocated to us. Since there is no road-map, it is from that compulsion that one has to look for alternatives to grow.” Spectrum refers to the air-waves on which the communication signals travel and it is basically the raw material for the operators.
The company holds two Unified Access Services License (UASL), one for Mumbai metro and the other for the rest of Maharashtra and Goa.
According to the government guidelines issued in January 2008, a CDMA operator with the same subscriber base gets roughly half the spectrum allocated to a GSM operator.
