The magnificent tiger, Panthera tigris (Linnaeus), is a striped animal. It has a thick yellow coat of fur with dark stripes. The combination of grace, strength, agility and enormous power has earned the tiger its pride of place as the national animal of India. Out of eight races of the species known, the Indian race, the Royal Bengal Tiger, is found throughout the country except in the north-western region and also in the neighbouring countries, Nepal, Bhutan and Bangladesh. Tigers are now getting extinct. The Government of India, under its Project Tiger programme, started a massive effort to preserve the tiger population in 1973. Today, the tiger advances as a symbol of India's conservation of itself its wildlife heritage.

Ya,the time is nearing very quickly and we just might have to rewrite old school Books for future kids since India might just have to look for a New National Animal because Considering the condition of our current national animal — Tiger, this could well be a reality very soon

India is losing Tigers so fast that it may soon be without a single national animal in the wild.Poaching, shrinking forests and weak political will have nearly wiped the Tiger(Panthera Tigris) our national animal, out
With Just about 1400 Tigers left, even by the most optimistic calculations, the Tiger will most probably survive only a few more years. And still our government refuses to take adequate steps to save it.

his possibility has prompted Sanctuary Asia, a magazine on wildlife, to launch a nationwide online campaign to find a new national animal
As part of the campaign, launched on December 24, an online letter at New National Animal signed by the young and the old would be sent to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. The petition essentially is to vote for the new national animal.
“Students can sign the petition voting for the new national animal from among four choices — goat, monkey, donkey and rat — given on the website. The petition signed online as a mark of protest against government apathy will be sent to the office of the prime minister,” said Bittu Sahgal, editor, Sanctuary magazine.
Project Tiger, one of the most ambitious wildlife conservation projects in the world launched 35 years ago by the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, was considered a success. But the ground reality is that there are only 1,400 tigers left in the country now.
“This campaign is essentially for young persons and it is an oblique way to draw focus to the fact that our government is simply not giving the tiger the importance it deserves,” says Sahgal. The tiger was chosen as national animal on the advice of Dr Karan Singh just before the launch of Project Tiger. Earlier, the national animal of the country was the lion. The tiger was chosen as national animal because it was found across the country and lions were confined to only one area.
