Phone Number Portability announced for Indian mobile phones by Telecom Dept.

Good news for those who has to stick to a mobile company even if they want to move because they can't change their number.
Central Telecom Department announced that now customer can keep their old number even if they switch to new mobile service provider.

A. Raja, Minister of Communication and Information technology announced that it will be available at four metro cities by 2008 ie. Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai and Kolkata.

After ward, will be started in other circles in coming time.

Is it started or not?

good things have started to fade in dark.

The number portability which was to be implemented very early next yr 2010 is finding itself in doldrums.

The main 2 reasons can be :-

1. The technology is very costly. Who will bear the cost is the main reason of dispute. DOT,TRAI and telecom providers lock horn against each other

2. The idea of number portability came to limelight when a survey concluded with the result that nealry 58% people want to change their service provider. This time i don't know how, but only 3% people want to change their service provider without changing their number.

Is there any practical benefit of implementing this service ? Definitely, few companies are not happy as they see their customer going away once this service get implemented. Secondly it requires significant amount of money to be used.

Then why not to concentrate implementing other beneficial services like 3G and quality improvement ?
