A recent study revealed that only 9% to 16% of the cars in India are energy efficient .Considering environmental threats and ever rising prices of fuel it is felt that there should be a energy efficiency ratings for cars in India. It is suggested that Indian cars should have star rating indicating weight and fuel consumption which will be quite similar to energy efficiency standards issued for electronic goods.
The Automobile industry has seen a growth of 300% in last decade and is ever increasing , this has motivated the government to introduce a fuel efficiency star rating in Indian cars. At present there are around 330 cars model in India, out of which 32 cars fall in 5 star category which is considered best .52 cars fall in 4 star category which indicates fuel efficiency of 7 to 9 liters per 100 km. Those falling in 3 star category provides fuel efficiency of 9 to 11 liters per 100 km and least efficient cars will provide around 12 liters per 100 km, hence will fall in 1 star category.
This step will definitely motivate the car manufactures to come out with more fuel efficient and Eco friendly cars.
