Tata Motors has asked it's 1.40 lakh reputed customers to bring back their Nano so that they can change their starter motors. This is by far the biggest replacement exercise that ever happened in Indian Automobile Industry. This will cost Tata Motors around Rs.110 crore which is a whooping amount. In a statement issued to press the company has claimed that it is changing it's old starter with a new and better one. "We have devised a better starter motor and so we are upgrading it in our old Nanos for improved performance. We have not received any complaint for this and this is not a recall," a Tata Motors spokesperson said.
Mr.Deepesh Rathore – IHS Automotive India Head commented,”Tata Motors, like any other car-maker,wants to ensure that its customers are satisfied with their product. So they are willingly replacing the starters in all available Nanos in the market.
Tata Motors has started the replacement exercise in October and has already replaced around 50,000 starters. The company expects to complete the replacement process till mid next year. Tata Motors is willing to change the part in all the Nano cars which have been sold till date. This is not the first time Tata motors have asked for replacement in Nano car. Earlier in November 2010, Tata Motors had asked around 70,000 Nano cars owners to bring back their cars so as to install fire safety devices in their cars. They took this decision after a series of incidents where Nano cars had started catching fire on roads.
There is a big question mark on the R & D department of these automobiles companies who every now and then ask their customers to bring back their models so as to replace a outdated part.
