The key benchmark index was trading higher on the back of gains in global markets. The Sensex was up 140 points at 17,699 levels and the Nifty rose 0.8 per cent to 5,273.
Metals, auto and realty counters led the advances today.
Among the Sensex Stocks, Sterlite Ind was the biggest gainer. The stock rose 2.3 per cent in early trades.
M&M jumped 1.5 per cent and RIL advanced 1.4 per cent.
In US markets, upbeat news about manufacturing lifted the Dow Jones industrial average 155 points, or 1.5 percent. The Standard & Poor's 500 index rose 17 points, or 1.6 percent.
Asian markets were also trading higher today. Hong Kong’s Hang Seng rose 1.7 per cent and Japan’s Nikkei was up 1 per cent. China’s Shanghai Composite also gained 0.7 per cent.
