India won its first individual god medal in history of Olympics. Abhinav Bindra had been fourth after qualifying but had a brilliant final round and the Indian, the epitome of tranquillity, hit a near perfect 10.8 on his last shot to pull in front of Henri Hakkinen of Finland, who fell to bronze with a poor final shot.
His final shot gave India's first gold medal in 10m men's air rifle shooting.
Hockey's eight gold medals notwithstanding, the last coming 28 years ago, this is the first time that an Indian has won an individual gold since modern Olympics started in 1896. There is no greater joy than listening to the sound of the national anthem on the world's biggest stage.
Now atleast no one can finger to India saying that no Indian individual is capable enough to get individual gold medal in olympics.
