Can Information and Communications Technology Contribute to Poverty Reduction?
The economy of India is growing fast. Companies like General Motors, Unilever and Coca-Cola are pinning their future growth plans on Asia (Anand Giridharadas, 2007), where tens of millions of consumers are stepping over the threshold from poverty to the middle class.
The telecom industry is the fastest in development. Real challenges arise from the poverty and inequality of the Indian economy. But to appeal to these low-income, highly price- conscious customers, many businesses are finding that they must learn to make money on drastically less expensive offerings. The concept of marketing and communication strategies of the Western corporations will have to change to reflect the shifting center of economic gravity. The Information Technology is changing the face of India. Indian software companies and electronics/telecom are achieving a unique distinction of providing efficient software solutions with cost and quality as an advantage by using state of-the-art technology. (Department of IT, India, Annual Report, 2005-2006) The over all scenarios provides with immense R&D and business opportunities. - Tosha

No, it can't . What all it can do is to provide new job to people and rest is their own profit.
Re: Can Information and Communications Technology Contribute to Poverty Reducti
But there are some social responsibilities ... of every citizen. And according to the law ... companies are deemed to be as a person and thus they are citizens too ... so,
the companies can get involved in activities like providing education ... and there are a million ways to get involved in imparting education.
And rather it must be made compulsory by the government for all the companies to directly or indirectly get involved in education the uneducated.
Because MNCs will collapse, if the people below poverty line become uncontrollable. ??
Education is the only way India can become the worlds most powerful and rich nation. No matter how much profit the business makes ... !
Re: Can Information and Communications Technology Contribute to Poverty Reduction?
Poverty reduction cannot be an industry specific subject. The will and desire to do so should come from the cptains of industry. It applies to IT or any other field. IT is just like any other industry is contributing its bit. We should not expect too much from them, its undue pressure. Its a method of making maoney as like any other businessand money is made, the game is same horde it or spend it on some meaningful purpose.

The IT environmnt is quickly filling in India and it's great. Indian businesses should begin to setup corporate structures including training and recruiting/sponsorship in colleges. This banding together and supporting the local economy will further stregenthen India for future relations!
India will need to establish trade relations with other nations to ensure thier continued sucess in the IT marekt.
I work in the Indian callcenter space providing consulting services to call-centers as well as calling data allowing the centers to call quallified candidates. I've found these businesses experience the most growth when they create corporate structure and train thier peers to grow in the company.
I very much enjoy working with Indian callcenters and hope to continue to do so over many coming years!
