The UID card for Indian nationals - What numbering format ?
The new Id card or ( UID ) card is supposed to be high tech
and to be made tamper proof and fraud proof.
It is a good project and its success can bring a lot of benefits.
No doubt about it.
And it will remove all the other 11 types of ID cards that
are presently being used.
How ever, considering the large numbers involved - over 1.2 Billion,
it may be useful to number the cards in a humane manner.
Rather than have a large ID number - 12345678901234 on the card..
it may be less error prone and friendly for the user and the
public, if the ID format is done in this manner. Example:
1234 RATNA 2356
By putting a alfa word in between 2 sets of 4 digit numbers
the card ID number is easy to narrate or say over the phone
or counter..and it is also easy to remember.
The 5 letter alfa name should be :
Neutral.. No religious, language or race link
Has two phonetic vowels. (Rat Na )
Easy to pronounce and understood over the phone.
Should not have an "O and I" in the start and ending .
( To avoid confusion between numbers and alphabets )
What do our readers in this forum think of this format.?
Please do comment.
Re: The UID card for Indian nationals - What numbering format ?
i think it will be a good step.
Re: The UID card for Indian nationals - What numbering format ?
Wow.. That a really good News..!
Re: The UID card for Indian nationals - What numbering format ?
everyone has different opinion..and my opinion is-
it will be good initiative from govt if it is true but at the same time we have to consider abt the poor people in the country, who are not able to get food to eat..so in that case what these people will do?? for them this high tech card is just a piece of paper that's all.
so instead of spending billions of rupees on this card it is better to increase the standard of the livin of the people especially rural people. moreover one cant assure that this "high tech card" can reduce fraud..
Re: The UID card for Indian nationals - What numbering format ?
This UID is a good scheme, in the sense, there is a good chance that
the poor has a better chance of getting their due from the government
development efforts, compared to now, where middle men steal
away most of the benefits.
Re: The UID card for Indian nationals - What numbering format ?
I doubt if it will be ever implemented as it is expected.
Secondly, Govt. can have alphnumeric numbering like we have in PAN card but one you suggested like ..
1234 RATNA 2345 can't be implemented due to some computing short comings but yes its not impossible to do.
Re: The UID card for Indian nationals - What numbering format ?
avoinding long numbers is perfectly good idea. Anything to avoid loooooong digited numbers should be fine!

It is not at all difficult to do Alfa Numeric numbering..
Afterall these are all ASCI charaters.
Like your ordinary keyboard..if it can do it..then why not.?
The letter A is 69 in ASCI code.
So computing difficulty is not an issue here.
Mostly the problem is lack of imagination and dull witted thinking
of the Indian bureaucracy is the problem.
They have a reputation to muck things up.
