Well yeah this really works.. i already have the same facility available on my nokia E71.

You have to go in Menu--> select Help---> My Nokia ----> Subscribe to My nokia.

This service will eventually send a sms to service provider for update messages.

And they will keep sending mails updating you tips for using the phones and all new facilities available on ur nokia phone.
