Dowry, bride-burning, and domestic violence

Bride-burning occurs in South Asia when a young woman is murdered by her husband or his family for her family's refusal to pay additional dowry.

Indian Government statistics show that husbands and in-laws killed nearly 7,000 women in 2001 over inadequate dowry payments.

I know Indian people as (generally) friendly, kind and non-violent. So, I was shocked when I heard about bride burning as a "common issue" in India...
