Inexpensive A/V Reciever for my plasma t.v?

Hello friends,
I have a nice 60" Plasma TV which is having little low sound speakers.
I have two nice bookshelf speakers that I want to connect to an inexpensive A/V receiver via the Optical Out of the TV.
This will only be used for the occasional movie, most of the time the TV speakers are OK.

What are your recommendations?

To be easy I would have get one with HDMI, just because they can be had cheap and they do make a lot of things easier.
OR ANOTHER OPTION IS:-

Lots of sub $50 receivers which don't have HDMI. Make sure it's not one of the Samsung/Panasonic/"blur-ay/DVD player receiver" ones with proprietary speaker input.
