Journey of Biryani to India and possible origins

    Advert.
I came through some articles and multiple web sources which told about the journey of the mouth watering dish, Biryani to India and tried to compile the origin stories into one. I have attached a picture as well. Hope you will enjoy this read.

Although the origin of Biryani is not known but it is believed to have come from Persia – where they cooked the dish for their soldiers – into India through the Mughals.

Below are few origin stories of Biryani:-

    • Mughlai Biryani is an innovation from the kitchens of the Mughal Empire. The Persian kings brought with them the unique recipe of cooking meat and rice in rich spices.

    • During the Mughal Empire era (1800-1900), Lucknow was known as Awadh, giving rise to Awadhi Biryani and has less amount of spices than Mughlai Biryani.

    • In 1856, British deposed NawabWajid Ali Shah in Calcutta (now Kolkata), giving rise to Kolkata Biryani. The Kolkata Biryani is known for the use of Potatoes.

    • Aurangzeb installed Nizam-ul-mulk as the AsfaJahi ruler of Hyderabad as well as a ‘Nawab of Arcot’ to oversee AaruKaadu region (six forests) in the south of Hyderabad. These moves gave rise to Hyderabadi Biryani and Arcot Biryani.

    • The Biryani spread to Mysore by Tipu Sultan of Carnatic. However, a few Brahmins did not eat meat. So, they hired vegetarian Hindus as cooks giving rise to Tahiri Biryani.

Do you have any more origin stories? If so, please do share in this thread.

That is a nice sharing, like many I am also fond of Biryanis but if you eat Biryani in various region of India, you will find lots of diversity. Like north Indian Biryani is something completely different than the Biryani you eat in western part. To a great extent , northern Indian will not even consider it Biryani as they just mix a stew with rice and call it biryani.

Whats your view, have you eaten or just sharing what you read around ?
