Google has introduced a new privacy feature aimed at addressing concerns about leaked conversations and privacy invasion. This feature notifies users when someone takes a screenshot of their chats. It is currently available in API form, requiring integration by apps into their platforms. Popular platforms like Instagram, Facebook Messenger, and Snapchat already use a similar feature.

The mechanism involves sending users a notification when a screenshot is taken, allowing them to know when and by whom. On Instagram, users can activate this function by swiping up in the chat. Google plans to extend this capability to Android soon, although it is not yet available.

What sets this feature apart is its release in API form, enabling various apps to integrate it. Some U.S. apps are currently testing it, and it is expected that others will adopt the Android 14 API. Snapchat, in particular, has a default setting allowing any app to use the API support provided with Android, streamlining integration.

As the testing phase progresses, users can anticipate better control over their chat privacy. Apart from providing a safeguard against privacy breaches, the Screenshot Detection System, implemented through this API, is expected to be resource-efficient for companies. With potential widespread adoption, users on different platforms can look forward to improved security measures for their personal conversations.
