China overtakes India in PhDs too

BANGALORE: It’s not just agriculture, even in doctoral degrees (PhDs), China seems to have overtaken India. Even as the debate rages over Union HRD minister Kapil Sibal’s reforms in school and university education, the National Knowledge Commission has asked the HRD ministry to go in for an immediate revamp in the way universities go about awarding PhDs.

Their fear is not unfounded. The growth in the number of doctorates in India is a mere 20% as compared to 85% in China! Worse, not more than 1% of students who complete their under-graduate degrees opt for doctoral studies in India. The NKC’s survey across India has thrown up these facts at a time when our research laboratories are crying for well-trained young doctorates.

The model set by china is exceptional and India needs to step up the gear and promote research in the country.Most Indian post-graduates tend to take up some IT jobs in Multinational Companies.The few who are really interested in research fly abroad because working conditions are better and resources are in abundance in countries like USA,China,Germany and Switzerland.

The Government has started taking few initiatives to improve research in the country.Setting up of institutes of national importance like the IISERs and NISER will definitely generate interest in research in India and consequently produce more PhD s.But there is a lot more to be done. Premier institutes like IITs need to concentrate more on research activities.State of the art technologies must be set up at national laboratories.The financial aid for Doctorate students also needs a hike.Better scholarships offered abroad also leads to post graduates from India to leave the homeland for research.The quality of research works in the country needs some periodic looking into to ensure quality of research papers produced.

Lets work towards more innovation and better understanding of the universe from the bright Indian brains.
