How great companies got their names
Every single person, animal, city, country has a name that is its identity. Similarly, companies have a name and there are millions of companies around the world. Some companies are huge and famous and its worth taking a quick look at their past to find out how they came up with there company name.
We know alot of people wonder about how Apple came by its company name which is of course based on a fruit and why Microsoft is called Microsoft. You might be surprised by how these names stuck, so to speak and where the inspiration originated.
Although our list could be huge, we selected only some of the most popular companies to explore how their names came to be.
Honda:
One of the most popular Japanese Automobile company Honda took its name from the name of its founder that was Soichiro Honda.
Hotmail:
Jack Smith and Sabeer Bhatia, the real founders of the Hotmail wanted to end the name in “mail”. They tried all kind of names but didn’t find any suitable name. At last they decided to name it as “Hotmail” which also included the letters “HTML” in it. HTML is a markup language that is used to write web pages.
CISCO:
One of the largest company in the field of Information Technology such as routers and many other networking products. It has been commonly said that Cisco is an acronym but the fact is that it is derived from a city named “San Francisco” in USA. It is also been said that CISCO’s logo resembles to the famous Golden Gate Bridge of San Francisco.
Samsung:
A Korean company that offers electronic goods around the world and has a strong hold on market share. ”Samsung” is a Korean word which is referred to as “Tristar or Three Stars”. According to company sources three represents “Powerful” and the “stars” mean eternity.
Fuji:
A japanese company that manufactures photographic films and digital cameras. It named after the Fuji Mountain that is the largest mountain of Japan.
HP:
One of the largest computer and other hardware suppliers in the world has an interesting story
behind its name. HP stands for Hewlett-Packard. Bill Hewlett and Dave Packard were two owners of the company and they tossed a coin to decide the company’s name whether it should be Hewlett-Packard or Packard-Hewlett.
