The Indian government has launched a new initiative called 'One Nation, One Student ID' under the National Education Policy of 2020.
This will provide a unique identification number to all government and private schools in India through the creation of the 'Automated Permanent Academic Account Registry (APAAR)'.
The APAAR ID will complement the existing 12-digit Aadhaar ID that each student possesses and will serve as a lifelong identifier to monitor students' academic progress and accomplishments. The state government has directed all schools to seek parental consent for issuing the new identity card.
The APAAR ID will be generated based on each student's Aadhaar number and will require separate parental consent.
Schools have been instructed to conduct a special parent-teacher meeting to educate parents about the APAAR ID and its applications before seeking their consent.
The government has promised that they'll keep the data private and only share it with other government agencies if necessary. If parents agree, they can change their minds and withdraw their consent whenever they want. Once they give their consent, it's up to the school to upload the information onto the central Unified District and Information System For Education Plus website.
