The Indian government wants social networking sites to monitor user content and remove any offensive material. It is reported that telecom minister Kapil Sibal had a meeting with officials of social networking sites and has asked them to set up proper mechanism to monitor content on their sites. The minister has asked the officials to remove offensive images and statements which are deeply hurting the sentiments of Indian political class .
The minister in respond to a question at the conference said "We have to take care of the sensibilities of our people, we have to protect their sensibilities. Our cultural ethos is very important to us.We'll certainly evolve guidelines to ensure that such blasphemous material is not part of content on any platform." The minister added by saying that the government has no intention of censoring any content but will not allow these social networking sites to defame public figures .
The Facebook issued a statement "We will remove any content that violates our terms, which are designed to keep material that is hateful, threatening, incites violence or contains nudity off the service," . The Facebook officials said that it will take remove every content that breaches it terms.
